A Walsall 2nd team, containing several 3rd team players, produced a strong second half performance in eventually securing a fairly convincing victory over a hard working Vesyans team. The Walsall team are currently on top of the Midlands Reserve League 2. It was pleasing to see most of the squad members having the opportunity to have some game time before they play their final five league matches of the season.
The first half was a rather dour affair with the visitors in particular being guilty of committing several basic errors. The game became a stop, start contest with the referee’s whistle being heard far too often. But eventually the visitors managed to breakthrough after some improved passing saw the ball reach Jake Bridgeman on the left wing. He showed good speed and strength to go over for the first try near the corner flag. Jordan Lay then stepped up to put over an excellent touchline conversion. Just before the interval a good driving lineout saw Tom Aston securing the final score of the half.
The second period saw the visitors taking far more control of the game. They began to run and support each other well, this resulted in some good tries being scored. Teenager Joe Coleman was very evident in several plays. He made a fine run and then had Ben Pitt in support for the first try of the half. A Jacob Lay run resulted in Aston getting his second try. Good lineout play by Jamie Roberts and then a couple of quick passes put Tony Lay through for another try. Five minutes later it was his son, Jacob that broke away for another Walsall score. The strong running Curtis Green finished off a good passing movement with a try near the corner flag. The final two tries were scored by scrum half Coleman. The Walsall players combined together well before Coleman made the final sprint for the tries. Ben Pitt added two conversions.
Final Score - Veseyans 0 - Walsall 46
