Staffordshire Under 17 Cup Finals
This season’s county cup finals were played in a new back to back format at Walsall RFC. Walsall played Stafford in the first semi-final. Stafford held an 8 – 3 lead at the interval with Will Hennessy kicking a penalty for Walsall. The next score followed good handling along the backs allowing Joe Tipson to make good ground with Sam Garbett supporting well and run in behind the posts. Will Hennessy converted. Louis Vale was the next to score following a good spell of pressure for a try again converted by Will Hennessy giving Walsall a 17 – 8 lead, which they managed to hold on to for the rest of the game
Burton were Walsall’s opponents in the final. Burton opened the scoring with a converted try after their full back ran some distance. Walsall then had a period of pressure and Will Hennessy spotted a gap and made a dash to the posts to score a try which he converted. The Burton full back repeated a run from deep and gave Burton the opportunity to score wide out. The second half saw both sides gave their all to score decisive points. Walsall managed to stay in the Burton 22 for a period of time during which George Perkins forced his way over the line for the try converted by Will Hennessy. Walsall could have had further points but were unable to ground the ball cleanly. The match finished with Burton counter attacking from deep, with the Walsall defence scrambling across to put them in touch near the half way line and hang on to a 14 – 12 victory and win the Staffordshire Under 17 cup.
