On a bone chillingly cold but bright winter afternoon, Bromsgrove Colts were the visitors for this return League match. Walsall were fielding a strong team and unusually a full compliment of subs.
After some even play by both sides, George Perkins broke the deadlock after a clean lineout from Walsall, converted by Zach Edwards. Score 7-0.
Tom Aston was leading by example with a man of the match performance and Karl Pothecary's breakdown competition was driving the opposition mad. Not to be left out Rory Kennedy had his best match of the season including a forceful run through midfield.
Although Walsall had the majority of play, it took until 30 minutes for a second score. Winger Ali Kennedy finished off a good blindside move to finish right in the corner. Zach Edwards was pleased with a difficult conversion. Score 14-0.
There was time for one more Try from Will Hennessey following a great solo effort, converted by Zach Edwards. Half-time score 21-0.
A raft of changes at half-time would hopefully not stop the momentum. George Perkins got his second Try of the day after a great break from Captain Tom Aston. Converted by Will Hennessey. Score 28-0.
Bromsgrove got a deserved Try to give 28-5 which also served to remind Walsall that concentration was key to winning the game. The scoreline edged up with a penalty kick from Will Hennessey giving 31-5. The last play of the game saw a great passing move by the Walsall Backs ending with Zach Edwards beating the Bromsgrove last defender for the final Try and quick drop kick conversion. Final score 38-5.
Great team play from all concerned today. The Forwards excelled in their lineouts and scrums and the Backs ran some great lines and didn't miss a tackle. George Green showed character and skill plus a special mention to Nico Watkins who came off with a finger pointing decidedly in the wrong direction, quickly fixed, after a brief recovery period he went back on to give another sterling performance.
